How to Identify Quality in Home Furniture

At Brawley Furniture, we understand that furniture shopping can be overwhelming. Not only are there a multitude of options to choose from and financing plans to consider, it’s also often difficult to tell the quality items apart from those which only look nice on the surface. While we stand behind the quality of all the brands we offer, our team also wants to help you make educated home furniture purchases wherever you go. In this article, we’ll go over some things to look for in order to determine whether a piece of home furniture is of high quality.

  • Wood Furniture. When looking for wood furniture, search for pieces that are made from solid hardwood or plywood that has at least eight layers. On the other side of that coin, avoid home furniture made of flimsy plywood, fiberboard, or similar materials. A good quality piece of wood furniture should have very few knots, as these are prone to cracking. In addition, we at Brawley Furniture recommend that you look for joints that are dovetailed or mortise-and-tenoned at the high end, or at least doweled or screwed.
  • Upholstered Furniture. For upholstered furniture, check the density of the foam in the cushions—we at Brawley Furniture recommend foam with a density of 1.8 pounds or higher. In addition, unzip the cushions and check inside—you should see a foam core that’s wrapped in protective fiber. There are multiple systems that can provide effective support for the cushions, including coil, cone, and grid springs, so the best way to judge quality on that front is to simply sit on the piece in various poses to see how it feels.

We hope that these tips help you find the high-quality home furniture you deserve. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to call our team.
